Temploratization – it’s here!

For certain types of video, the use of templates – templatorization – instead of all original structures, is practical.

About a year ago, Terry Curren and I tackled the topic of Temploratization of Creativity, and now it’s here! With directr you choose the template and the app then tells you what shots to take. It then builds them into a video based on the template.

These are fairly simple scenarios covering common types of video treatment. Given the listing of shots required on the few I sampled, I’d say the results would work as an edit, as long as the instructions were followed.

It’s pretty much what I envisioned the first round of temploratization to be: slightly more than a glorified shot list, not so far removed from my teaching a class some 20 years ago on the shots they’d need for a child’s birthday party, for example.

Still, nice to see the predictions come true. The way some shows are written to formulae, it might make it to “Hollywood” in the future. (Not really.)

Really interesting! I’ve been using iMovie’s iPhone templates for a little while now, and I’m always pleased with the results. The problem I have is comes when you run into the limitations of the template (primarily that they all start to look the same).

I’m absolutely going to check out directr!
