Metadata is the New Gold!

According to a recent webinar by MESA “Metadata is the new Gold”

According to a recent webinar, “Metadata is the New Gold,” a Webinar produced by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance and the Hollywood IT Society, metadata is more important than ever. Each of the presenters had specific takeaways.

Matt Turner, CTO of media and publishing for San Carlos, Calif.-based NoSQL database company MarkLogic made a couple of relevant comments:

“It shouldn’t come as any surprise that metadata impacts all aspects of the business,”

People think of metadata being associated with just digital assets, but it leverages all the data related to the title, the product, marketing information.” When metadata is accurate and consistent (and, especially, easy to access) it contributes to efficient business processes”

Brian Cross, director of digital rights and assets for Condé Nast added:

“It’s the way we guide discovery when finding assets, and for rights, [and] it’s [about] what you can and can’t do with the asset itself. In terms of archive products, metadata is the product in a lot of ways.”

I certainly echo those sentiments. Metadata needs to be captured as early in the production as possible, and tracked throughout production. The full ‘Metadata is the new Gold’ presentation is available online.
