7toX for Final Cut Pro 1.0.13 hits the Mac App Store

This free update is now available in the Mac App Store with support for the new version 1.2 XML (see my review of Final Cut Pro 10.0.6 for the full details). Which means that this versions requires 10.0.6 and won’t work with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro. Here’s the list of bug fixes:

• Bug fix for error reporting in PSD and nested sequences
• Bug fix for detecting empty logging fields
• Bug fix for missing or offline media

Final Cut Pro X 10.0.6 Update

Final Cut Pro X 10.0.6 is probably the most feature-rich release since the original one. As well as the features Apple discussed at NAB  2011:

  • Multichannel Audio Editing Tools
  • Dual Viewers
  • MXF Plug-in Support, and
  • RED camera support

there’s more. Much more. Including a feature I wish they hadn’t put in and one I’m extremely pleased they did. I’m ecstatic that selective pasting of attributes is now an Final Cut Pro X feature, but I’m really annoyed that persistent In/Out points made it to this release. More on these later.

Small production footprint: Final Cut Pro X

Final Cut Pro X

I made the deliberate decision to use Final Cut Pro X to experience it on a bigger project. While there are some things that bug me in the interface – see my Disclosure Triangle rant for a start – there are many things I really enjoy and I’m mostly still finding it faster, particularly now that I’m into editing.  Faster for my editing style at least. It performed well with FW800 and USB2 interfaces into the mid-2011 MacBook Pro I was working with in the field. It performs even better with that USB drive connected via USB3 on the MacBook Pro Retina. (My welcome home gift to myself, originally intended to be used as part of the production.)

From eight keystrokes to three – for the same job in FCP X.

While logging the Road to Ra material I’m working on, I’ve developed a pattern for the Content Logging part of the process, so I can do it all with the keyboard. The process was:

My Final Cut Pro X frustrations: Number two

Because I was using a lot of double system on my recent shoot, I kept running into this problem.

I would apply appropriate Keywords to the audio and video that would make up a synchronized Clip, making it easy to find them when I was ready to synchronize them up.

Final Cut Pro X and Mountain Lion – now that’s interesting!

Last night we arrived back from the Solar Odyssey as our involvement finished on Sunday (long story shot, “creative differences”) and today my welcome home present to myself – a nice new MacBook Pro retina. Naturally I immediately updated to Mountain Lion. (New machine, new OS, might as well get it all over together).

One of the first apps I was looking at was Final Cut Pro X – very nice to see a full size 1080P signal in the Viewer window 1:1 and still have a whole heap of screen real estate. (My confession is that I’m using all the pixels 1:1 not in Retina mode. I already have to wear glasses for a computer screen so I might as well capitalize on it.)

Of course I look through the menus and what do I find in the Edit menu but:

My Final Cut Pro X Frustrations: One in a possible series

Although I love Final Cut Pro X overall, there are still ways it frustrates me. Today – disclosure triangles! Final Cut Pro X is incredibly bad at remembering the state of disclosure triangles in list view in the Event Browser.

It forgets the state of the disclosure triangles if you leave an Event and then return to it later. (Should be remembered and open exactly as it was left.)

Some thoughts on Metadata

There are many kinds of metadata, and previously I’ve noted six that are important to production. There’s a whole second category of metadata that’s more related to asset management, but they share the common goal of being able to find a specific shot, as quickly as possible. In this post I’m talking about what would be Added Metadata of the six.

For scripted material, this is relatively easy, particularly with tools like QR Slate, Movie Slate, and the like now available. For scripted material you have known assets: Scene, shot, take, character, etc., as well as one or two free form fields like Comment. It is with un-scripted material that we run into problems not solvable with those solutions (at least in their current forms).
